WHO IS BUDDY HOLLY?
Buddy Holly was an American
singer-songwriter and a pioneer of rock and roll. It is a generally
accepted fact that he is the single most influential creative force
in early rock and roll. Holly was among the first group of inductees
to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is considered one of the 100
Greatest Artists of All Time.
WHAT HAPPENED TO BUDDY HOLLY?
In January, 1959 Buddy Holly was the
top act on the Winter Dance Party tour. Because of a falling out with
his bandmates in the Fall of 1958, Holly assembled a backing band
consisting of Tommy Allsup (guitar), Waylon Jennings (bass) and Carl
Bunch (drums), and billed them as "The Crickets."
Following a performance at the Surf
Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, on February 2, 1959, Holly chartered a
small airplane to take him to the next stop on the tour. Holly,
Richie Valens, and J.P. Richardson (the “Big Bopper”) and the
pilot were killed en route to Moorhead, Minnesota, when their plane
crashed soon after taking off from nearby Mason City in the early
morning hours of February 3.
WHO IS PEGGY SUE?
Peggy Sue Gerron was born on June 15th, 1940, in Olton, Texas, and grew up in Lubbock, Texas. She was a high
school senior when she was cast into the international spotlight by
Buddy Holly's release of the namesake song that climbed to the top of
1957 Billboard Charts. The rest is musical history.
Following graduation from high school,
Peggy Sue became a member of the Crickets "family" when she
and the group's drummer, Jerry Allison, were married. She shared in
the dreams and extraordinary success of Buddy Holly and the Crickets.
Unfortunately, she also had to share in the ultimate tragedy—the
day the music died.
